Nestled on a private island in the Straits of Malacca lies a sanctuary two million years in the making. Here, on 300 acres of primordial forest, only the gentlest footprint has been made to accommodate a serene resort and its secluded estates.
Declared paradise by Luciano Pavarotti and once honoured as the world’s finest as ‘Number One in the World’ by Condé Nast Traveller, this is a realm where architecture exists in a state of reverence. Walls curve to embrace ancient trunks, and roofs open to the sky, allowing the forest an uninterrupted ascent. Beneath a cathedral-like canopy, it is not only a haven for guests but also for a vibrant kingdom of wildlife, from swooping eagles to the resonant call of the hornbill.

THE LEGEND OF SPENCER CHAPMAN
In May 1945, after three-and-a-half years evading Japanese forces through Malaya’s jungles, British Colonel Freddy Spencer Chapman finally reached Pangkor Laut. Disguised as a Chinese villager, he had crossed enemy lines and travelled 15 days to reach the island.
On the night of May 13th, Chapman and his compatriot, Major R. Broome swam 45 meters through dark waters from Emerald Bay to HMS Statesman, a Royal Navy submarine that would carry them through seven days of Japanese air attacks to freedom in Ceylon.
Despite the perilous journey, the beauty and tranquillity of Pangkor Laut left a great impression on Spencer Chapman and his time on the island is detailed in his book ‘The Jungle is Neutral’. Today, Chapman’s Bar marks the exact spot where he made his legendary midnight swim to freedom. This iconic waterfront venue invites guests to toast courage while enjoying sunset views across the Straits of Malacca, craft cocktails in hand, standing where history was made.

Inspired by that legendary 45-metre swim across Emerald Bay to freedom, The Chapman’s Challenge was created in tribute to a story of courage etched deep into the island’s history. Hosted annually, our island invites you to retrace Chapman’s escape route in a test of endurance, resilience, and bravery.
THE UNCLE LIM STORY
Chef Lim Fang Tat, affectionately known as “Uncle Lim”, was a pillar of our resort from its opening in 1985, leading his team at the beloved, breezy Uncle Lim’s Kitchen. For decades, our guests have flocked to this al fresco restaurant to savour his authentic Hock Chew and Nyonya home cooking. Set against the rocks overlooking Royal Bay, the venue offers breathtaking views of rustic fishing boats silhouetted against the setting sun across the Straits of Malacca.
Born in Penang to parents from Hainan, Uncle Lim’s culinary foundation was laid by his father, enriched by the Nyonya influences of his hometown. He honed his craft in Penang’s kitchens, where his dedication to elevating tradition with the finest fresh ingredients earned him a formidable reputation. It was this dedication that brought him to the personal attention of Tan Sri Dato’ Seri (Dr) Yeoh Tiong Lay, leading to the creation of his namesake restaurant at the flagship YTL Luxury Resort, Pangkor Laut Resort.
Uncle Lim’s legacy is one of authentic flavour, heartfelt hospitality, and an unwavering commitment to culinary heritage—a cherished tradition that continues to inspire the kitchen and our guests.
PAVAROTI'S PARADISE
“This is really paradise.” — 1994
When Pavarotti came to perform, he fell in love with the place. What began as a single concert became something much deeper.
He returned in 2002 for humanitarian concerts and to bless our spa. In 2003, he brought The Three Tenors together for their final performance.
Through three visits and one profound declaration, Pangkor Laut became forever woven into the maestro’s legendary legacy.
