THE CHAPMAN'S CHALLENGE 2024

10 - 12 May

The crucible of war served as a catalyst, unveiling every facet of resourcefulness, resilience, and determination that Spencer Chapman had cultivated throughout his life. Chronicled in his book, 'The Jungle is Neutral,' are the tales of his Malayan escapades, bearing witness to his profound love for nature and wildlife, which fuelled his unwavering resolve. Chapman, an officer-naturalist, stands as a testament to the remarkable synergy between the tenacity of the human spirit and the resilience of the body.

In 1945, the indomitable British Colonel, Spencer Chapman, breached enemy lines, concluding a more than three-year evasion of the occupying Japanese forces. Demonstrating sheer tenacity and an unyielding will, he traversed Emerald Bay by swimming, navigating his way to safety against formidable odds.

The Chapman's Challenge, a commemorative event, comprises a 3.8km road run encircling the island, a 2.4km trek through an ancient two-million-year-old rainforest, culminating in a 1km swim in the sea off Emerald Bay, concluding at Chapman's Bar.
